The FOODSniffer and app in use.

This nifty kitchen gadget could spell the end of sell-by dates - because it can tell whether food is fresh or not just by 'sniffing' it.

The cutting edge device is claimed to be the world's first 'electronic nose', helping users to tell if any meat, poultry or fish in their fridge has gone off.

It uses special sensors to 'smell' temperature, humidity, ammonia and dangerous organic compounds present in food then sends the results to a user's smartphone.

Its makers say it reduces the risk of food poisoning by alerting users to the freshness of their food before they eat it.
