This is what America's Capitol Hill would have looked like had British engineer Marc Isambard Brunel got his way 223 years ago.

Engineer Brunel came up with this design for the US Congress in 1794 and his vision intriguingly included a mini statue of liberty perched on top of a glorious two tiered building with sweeping steps.

The great engineer, who went on to design the Thames Tunnel, was clearly ahead of his time as New York did eventually get its own Statue of Liberty.

But the famous statue in New York Harbour was not completed until 1886, a full 92 years after Brunel incorporated one into his plans.

His plans are now coming up for sale at Bonhams in London.
