A dagger which belonged to the legendary Gordon of Khartoum has emerged for sale for £3,000.<br />
<br />
The heroic British military officer's 19th century North African weapon is going under the hammer with C & T Auctions, of Ashford, Kent.<br />
<br />
Major General Charles Gordon distinguished himself during British military campaigns in China, Egypt and Sudan in the late 19th century. When another revolt broke out in Sudan in 1884, he was again sent there to rescue loyal soldiers and civilians.<br />
<br />
Gordon's men managed to evacuate 2,500 civilians but he then ignored orders to flee himself, choosing to remain in beseiged Khartoum. They held out for almost a year, earning the admiration of the British public, before the city was taken.<br />
<br />
Gordon was killed on the steps of the Governor General's palace on January 26, 1885, two days before a British relieving force arrived.
