The incredible heroics of a navy commando who single-handedly took out two huge German guns on D-Day can be told after his prestigious gallantry medals were put up for auction.

Petty Officer Ronald McKinlay was nominated to destroy one of the 88mm guns which he did by sneaking up close enough to hurl three hand grenades at it before taking the only surviving German prisoner.

Later on that day, he braved sniper fire to drag to safety a wounded colleague lying face down in the dirt.
After the war McKinlay became a Royal Navy frogman under the legendary 'Buster' Crabb and was a consultant for the John Mills film Above Us the Waves.
