The moment the porcelain teapot sold for an incredible £575,000.
Storm over a broken teapot...
A bargain-hunter is celebrating after a porcelain teapot he bought on a whim for £15 turned out to be the first one ever made in America and has sold for an incredible £575,000.
The broken pot, missing its lid, was produced by John Bartlam, a British potter who took his trade across the Atlantic to America in the mid-18th century.
But Bartlam's enterprise was interrupted by the American Revolution and he rapidly returned to the UK. Hardly any examples of his American work exist today.
Due to a great deal of US interest four tea bowl's from the same set made by Bartlam in America sold at auction for £100,000 in 2013.
It was thought the matching blue and white teapot could sell for a similar sum, but due to storm of interest the hammer eventually came down, very carefully, at a whopping £575,000
It's thought the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York topped the bidding.
