The 'leather' pineapple fibres can be used to make bags and shoes.
A designer has come up with a wacky sustainable alternative to leather that you would normally find in your fruit bowl - the pineapple.
Piñatex is a leather-like material that can be used to make shoes, handbags, clothes and furnishings, but it is made from the fibres of pineapple leaves.
The textile can be waxed to look like leather, stamped to look like snakeskin or given a metallic finish for a luxury look.
And, unlike leather, it has little impact on the environment because it is a by-product of the pineapple farming industry in the Philippines that would otherwise be left to rot.
