The driving seat of the Lada Niva 4 X 4.
A Soviet relic that was once the laughing stock of British roads is set to become a surprise hit due to the demise of the iconic Land Rover Defender.
With production of the classic British motor coming to an end this year, outdoor types are finding an unlikely replacement for the beloved model - the Lada Niva.
The boxy Russian car was dubbed "a skip on wheels" when it was first unveiled alongside its even more mocked sister model the Riva in the late 1970s, and despite a cult following was pulled from production in 1997.
But it is now winning over an army of new fans in rural areas across the country after canny dealer Mark Key brought it back to Britain for the first time in nearly 20 years.
