Final touches - Project Manager Chris Squires at work on the restored interior of the one of the Brighton Belle carriages at the workshops of WH Davis in Shirebrook, Derbys.
It's the Brighton Swell...
Back from the dead - The iconic Brighton Belle is being restored to its former glory - but with wider seats and aisles to accommodate today's plumper passenger.
A small band of enthusiasts have spent 10 years and £6m returning the Pullman carriages to their former glory in an age that epitomised luxury and style.
The unique carriages were individually designed in Art Deco style, and lined with stunning marquetry and plush furnishings.
But although the original features have been lovingly conserved, restorers have been forced into some unavoidable changes to make the famous locomotive more compatible with the modern age of train travel.
The original 2/2 seating plan has been adjusted to wider 2/1 to allow more room for the 21st century posterior, and USB ports, heaters and low voltage LED lighting have also been added.
The 5BEL Trust now hope the four bespoke electric carriages will be able to run on the UK mainline for the first early next year - 48 years after it went out of service.
