A soldier's desperate bid to say goodbye to his family by folding a letter into a matchbox and throwing it out of a moving train as it passed his home town has come to light after 97 years.
Sergeant Major George Cavan and his unit were called to the Western Front from their Scottish base at such short notice they didn't have time to write to their loved ones to tell them.
His story along with the poignant note has now emerged.
