The unlocked hinges revealed secret compartments.
Million pound coffer in Blenheim Palace finally reveals its secret corners...
An ornate 17th century jewellery cabinet from the opulent court of Louis XIV in Versaille has finally revealed its secrets after conservator's went to work at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.
Built by Parisian master craftsman Andre Boulle in the 1680's it is thought to have been owned by Louis's eldest son 'the Grand Dauphin'.
However, due to a key being misplaced the coffer had not been opened until restorer Ludovic Potts managed to pick the locks and reveal secret compartments hidden behind the hinges.
Blenheim house manager Kate Ballenger said 'the newly unlocked coffer revealed Boulles extraordinary craftsmanship, although sadly the secret drawers were all empty!'
