A lead statue of a bird which turned out to be a worthless dud in the Hollywood film The Maltese Falcon has sold for a whopping £2.5 million.

The 12-inch falcon was the object of desire of Humphrey Bogart's private detective character, who wrongly believed it to be a priceless, jewel-encrusted gold antique.
Experts had expected it to sell for £1 million but it was snapped up by an anonymous bidder for £2.5 million at the Bonhams sale in New York.
