Isambard Kingdom Brunel's personal technical drawing set has emerged for sale.

The historic set contains pencils, compasses and measuring devices used by the ingenious engineer whose remarkable body of work includes the Great Eastern ship, the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Great Western Railway.

The instruments are kept within an 8in by 4.5in Victorian era oak box which is engraved with Brunel's name.

The Devon-based vendor's great-grandfather was a friend of Brunel's son Henry who gave him the set and a collection of Smollett's History books signed by Brunel in 1902.
