A character cottage where literary great George Eliot penned the classic novel Middlemarch has got tongues wagging again after it went on the market for £799,950.

Brookbank Cottage in Haslemere, Surrey, is where Mary Ann Evans - her birth name - lived temporarily with her married lover George Henry Lewes while their London home was being renovated in 1871.

They rented the three bed home, which Eliot called a 'queer little cottage', from Anne Gilchrist, another English writer and member of the London Literary Society.
