Never-before-seen photos of the incredibly-rare moment a fearsome German U-boat surrendered have been unearthed in an RAF officer's archive.

The aerial images show U-570 on the surface of the north Atlantic with its crew stood on deck waiting to be taken prisoner following an air raid on their submarine.

U-570 was one of only six enemy submarines to be captured intact by the Allies in the Second World War and hardly any photos showing the moment of surrender exist.

The photos were discovered in an archive owned by Group Captain Montague Whittle who was in command of the RAF base in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The archive is being sold by Henry Aldridge & Son for £2,000.
