Smoke from a Flying Fortress which crashed after a raid on Leipzig.
A fascinating photo album has to come to light to reveal what went on inside a German POW camp - including stage shows in drag.
The Stalag Luft IV B album was compiled by British prisoner David Courtney, of 102 Squadron, whose Halifax was shot down near Berlin on January 20, 1944.
One of the photos shows the funeral of a British soldier who was assassinated by the German guards, although they have taken part in the ceremony by lifting their guns above the coffin.
Another shows a theatre performance put on by inmates where the performers were dressed as women to keep up morale.
