Residents in one of the worst areas of Britain for affordable housing have built five new homes for local families thanks to the generosity of a selfless woman who feared for the decline of her village.

The redoubtable Vanora Hereward bought an area of green land in the hope of using it to revitalise Toller Porcorum in West Dorset after the Post Office, shop and pub closed due to a lack of custom.
The late solicitor donated the plot to the parish council and help set up a trust to launch a bid to develop the houses on it.
