1985/6 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race: Tracy Edwards, skipper of 'Maiden' accepts the victor's champagne on arrive at Fort Lauderdale.

A boat that sailed into the history books 27 years ago but subsequently ran to ruin has been rescued by its former skipper and is now due to arrive home.

Sailing heroine Tracy Edwards hit headlines in 1990 after leading the first all-female crew to the finish line of the prestigious Whitbread Round the World Race.

When Miss Edwards, 54, checked up on the boat, called Maiden, in 2014 she was "shocked" and "saddened" to find it in a state of complete disrepair.

After a successful fundraising campaign Maiden is scheduled to take to the seas once again June 2018 after being returned to her to her former glory.
