'Capt Scott says no man will reach the pole as an impenetrable range of mountains are in the way'

An ominous warning from Captain Scott that no man would reach the South Pole nine years before he died on the return leg of a famous expedition to it has emerged.

The revelation is in a diary log from midshipman Neville Pepper, a crew member on expeditions to Antarctica in 1903 and 1904, which has emerged for auction.

In an extract from Pepper's log dated February 3, 1903, it is revealed Capt Robert Scott remarked 'no man will reach the pole as an impenetrable range of mountains are in the way'.
A.N Pepper's log, which documents every day life on the ship the Morning and includes neat sketches, is tipped to sell for £12,000 when it goes to auction on Feb 1.
