A heavy wooden ornament a couple used a doorstep in their home for 40 years has turned out to be a Chinese relic worth over £250,000.
The nine inch tall item is a carved brush pot dating back to the late 18th century when it would have been used to store calligraphers' brushes.
The unnamed husband and wife inherited the hefty object four decades ago but couldn't find a suitable place to display it so used it to hold back their living room door.
They recently invited an auctioneer from Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers to their cottage home in Hertfordshire to value some other ornaments as they wanted to raise some cash to buy a new car.
