Deserted Unter den Linden in East Berlin in 1959.
New book reveals unseen pictures of the bleak landscape of Cold War Berlin.
The remarkable photos were taken by a British visitor before and after the Berlin Wall was built in 1961.
Retired coin dealer Allan Hailstone visited Berlin several times between 1959 and 1966 and took hundreds of photos of both West Berlin and East Berlin.
The 78 year old was struck by the stark contrast between the vibrant, colourful West Berlin he encountered and rubble-filled, sparse East Berlin.
During his first visit to Berlin in 1959, Mr Hailstone was able to walk freely between the two sides of the city, but this changed when he returned in 1962 as the Berlin Wall had been built to stop east Berliners from escaping to the west.
