The 1990 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth.

A classic Ford coupe that won the prestigious British Touring Car Championship in 1990 has emerged for sale for a record-breaking £220,000.

The Sierra RS500 Cosworth won the coveted prize in 1990 after being entered by Trackstar Racing, who were co-founded just a year earlier in 1989 by the legendary Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, Mike Smith.

The team's sole ambition was to win the BTCC and after finishing runners-up in their first attempt, they took the crown home at the turn of the decade.

In 1990 the car won a staggering nine out of 13 races, setting eight fastest lap records in the process. It was the final time an RS500 won the title before it was replaced by Ford the following year.
Driven by Robb Gravett, the car was fitted with a new suspension, a five-speed gearbox and had a top-spec engine that produced over 500bhp.
