Game tales from the hills...remarkable album shows British attempts to win over newly invaded Tibet by playing sport's straight from the playing fields of England.

A collection of photos have come to light which show the people of the remote Himalayan nation of Tibet embracing one of the traditional British pastimes - a sports day.

The archive of more than 500 photos was collated by a British Lieutenant Colonel, R C MacGregor, of the Indian Medical Service, who was present in Tibet between 1904 and 1912.

These photos are one of the earliest examples of the British attempting to win 'the hearts and minds' of a native population as they were taken during the controversial Younghusband expedition to the distant Buddhist country.

The archive also features four never before seen photos of the Dalai Lama returning to Tibet in 1912 after his exile ended.
