The Yorkie bar today.

As one of the UK's most popular chocolate bars celebrates its 40th birthday, unseen archive images of the alternative bars that could have been launched instead have been revealed.

The Yorkie bar became one of the UK's top ten selling confectionery within a year of being launched and now 85.7 million are made every year.

But in 1976 Rowntree considered several other 'aspirational' sweets, including a port flavoured one, before opting for the chunky chocolate snack.

Rowntree Mackintosh, which already produced Kit Kat and Aero, decided to launch a new product to get into the solid chocolate bar sector and compete with Cadbury's Dairy Milk and Mars' Galaxy.

Nestlé UK, who bought the brand as part of Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988, have uncovered a portfolio of artwork that reveals all the ideas and the now famous bar's original name - Rations.
