A historic Jolly Roger flag hoisted above a D-Day ship during the Normandy invasion has surfaced 72 years later.

The large black flag with a skull and crossbones emblazoned across it was the unofficial insignia for the crew of a coastguard ship that operated off 'bloody' Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.

Their job was to rescue soldiers who had had to bale out into the sea from their landing craft during the invasion.
The 42ins by 47ins flag has now emerged for sale at auction for £1,500.
