The prestigious medal Queen Victoria gave her beloved maid who broke to her the tragic news of Prince Albert's death has emerged for sale for £7,000.

Annie MacDonald, the monarch's chief wardrobe maid, became one of her closest friends during 43 years of devout service.

When Victoria died in 1901, she was buried with a token of Annie in one hand and her trusted servant and companion John Brown in the other.

Annie's Faithful Service Medal, one of only three awarded to women, is going under the hammer with London-based auctioneers Spink & Son.
It is being offered for sale alongside a gold brooch with the letters 'VR', which was likely a gift from the Queen, and other precious mementos.
