The medals of a fearless British officer who stormed three machine gun posts during a daring assault have emerged for sale for £9,000.

Company Sergeant Major Frederick Thorndyke, of the City of London Battalion, London Regiment, led a three man team in capturing two posts under heavy German fire.

Not satisfied, he attempted to seize a third but was wounded during the dramatic action near Albert in the Battle of Amiens in August 1918.

He was awarded a prestigious Military Cross for 'conspicuous courage and qualities of leadership' when all the officers around him had been killed or wounded.
It was his third gallantry award in two years after receiving the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal for his Western Front heroics. His medals are going under the hammer with London-based auctioneers Spink & Son.
