A fascinating letter in which Winston Churchill describes the House of Commons as 'his theatre' has sold for £6,100.

Churchill wrote the prescient letter in 1929, just as he entered his so-called 'Wilderness Years', the period of his life where he stepped away from politics.

He told friend Sir Frederick 'Fritz' Ponsonby: "...the House of Commons has always been my theatre, and if I cannot play an effective part there, it would indeed be time to quit the somewhat wearisome pursuit of politics."
