A 400-year-old ostrich sculpture which has been in the same private collection for almost two centuries has sold for £1.8m.

The 15ins tall bronze sculpture had an estimate of £120,000, but sold for 15 times that, setting a new record for auctioneers Cheffins.

It was produced from the workshop of celebrated Renaissance sculptor Giambologna in the late 16th or early 17th century and previously owned by 18th century politician and writer Horace Walpole.
The sculpture was bought by the current owner's ancestor in 1842 for £50 and eight shillings - which equates to £3,000 in today's money.
