A rifle once used by famed explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley to shoot an African tribal leader in order to save his expedition party from slaughter has come to light.
Sir Henry picked up his Winchester rifle as his beleaguered team were about to be annihilated by angry natives in 'darkest Africa' during a dangerous rescue of a surrounded governor in Uganda.
He took aim at a 'vociferous native sporting an elaborate headdress and shield' who was inciting the rest of the tribe and pulled the trigger.
The immediate consequence of killing the leader scared off the large group of natives who ran into a forest.
It is being sold by Holt's on December 10.
