A construction worker had a lucky escape after the digger he was operating toppled over a wall and plummeted into the sea below.

The male, aged 42, was working on a harbour wall in Portland, Dorset, when the JCB suddenly went over the edge.

It is thought that the man was flung out of the driver's compartment as the digger fell 20ft and then landed on top of him when it hit the water.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and he was placed onto a stretcher.

He was airlifted to safety in the coastguard helicopter and taken to Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire.

A paramedic at the scene said the man is not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries but is thought to have a broken leg and collar bone.
