A signed robe worn by a young Muhammad Ali as he entered the ring to face heavyweight titan Sonny Liston in what turned out to be one of the greatest ever sporting upsets has emerged for sale for £150,000.

Ali, then aged 22 and still known as Cassius Clay, was the clear underdog as he stepped over the ropes to face world champion Liston in Miami on February 25 1964.

But despite the odds weighing heavily against Ali, the rising star displayed his trademark confidence when he emerged wearing a white robe embroidered with the words 'The Lip', a nod to his nickname The Louiseville Lip.

The match was handed to Ali when Liston, clearly beaten, refused to come out for the seventh round.
The robe has been tipped to fetch a staggering $200,000 - around £150,000 - when it goes under the hammer at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas.
