Proud family - Elizabeth Turner with her grandfathers MM.

A nine-year-old girl's school project has led her family to find her war hero great-grandfather's gallantry medal they knew nothing about.

Elizabeth Turner asked her grandmother Sheila Scott for help with her homework on World War Two and was told about a late relative who fought in Europe.

James Angel was a modest man who rarely spoke about his experiences of war, including
winning the Military Medal for one incredibly heroic action.

Sapper Angel put himself in the line of fire when Allied soldiers were pinned down by Germans as they tried to cross the Rhine in Germany in March 1945.

With great risk to his own life, he drew enemy fire away from his comrades by engaging them with his Bren gun and allowed the British to locate and silence the Germans.

It is believed that after the war Mr Angel sold his Military Medal to help provide for his seven children.

His family knew he once had a 'special medal' but had no idea what it was or was for until Elizabeth began her school project two weeks ago.
