Life on Mars? - Revolutionary black and white image of the red planet.

The remarkable first ever photograph of a complete orbit of another planet has emerged for auction and is tipped to sell for £20,000.

The fascinating mosaic image was taken by Mariner IX as it made its orbit of the red planet in 1972, giving scientists their first complete glimpse all round the mysterious planet.

The unmanned Mariner IX launched on May 30, 1971 and reached the red planet on November 14 of that year.

It had to wait for months of dust storms to clear before it was it was able to send back clear images of the planet's surface.
David Bowie's famous track 'Life on Mars' was released shortly after Mariner lX was launched as Mars fever gripped the world.
